ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL IN KUMASI (PAGE 45, MIRROR, FEB 13, 2010)

From George Ernest Asare, Kumasi

A programme dubbed, ‘The Italian New Film Festival’ which seeks to showcase the challenges of Italy, where foreign nationals attempt to mingle with indigenes and compete for job opportunities and accommodation as a way of enhancing their standard of living opened in Kumasi last weekend.
The screening of the films which started on Friday, February 5, 2010 would end tomorrow, Sunday, February 14, 2010 to offer many residents in Kumasi the opportunity to be part of the programme to appreciate the socio-cultural lifestyles of Italians.
It is associated with problems of immigration laws, accommodation, job opportunities, rule of law and family ties. The films were screened free of charge at the Golden Tulip, Kumasi City Hotel.
The programme is a collaboration between the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Luca Fratini, and the Honorary Vice Consul for Ashanti and Western Regions, Stefano Ramella Pezza.
Among the films screened during the 10- day period were ‘Cover boy, ‘IL Papa Di Giovanna, Lettere dal Sahara, La vera Leggenda, Riprendimi and Hotel Meina’
Explaining the rational behind the Italian film festival to The Mirror during an exclusive interview, Mr Fratini said diplomatic missions the world over have the responsibility of promoting cultural values between states “ so my main objective is to use these films to promote Italian culture among Ghanaians”.
He pointed out that since he took office in September last year, he had been selecting films that promote effective integration between Africa and Europe for screening.
“The idea is to bring modern films for the Ghanaian public to know and appreciate Italy as it is today” he stressed.
He said about 50 years ago, the Italian film industry concentrated on activities of economic boom, often referred to as the sweet life in Italy, “ but now recent films concentrate on everyday life problems, economic and social crises which reflect the situation in the country at the moment”.
