REFLECTORS FOR WHEEL CHAIRS IN KUMASI (PAGE 35, MIRROR , FEB 13, 2010)

From George Ernest Asare, Kumasi.

As part of measures to reduce road traffic accidents in the Kumasi metropolis and its environs among the physically challenged, the Kumasi office of the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has distributed a number of reflectors to be fixed on their wheelchairs.
Briefing The Mirror on the importance of the reflectors, the Regional Licence Officer of the DVLA, Mr N.T. Matey, said the reflectors would make the wheelchairs and, particularly the riders visible at night and during foggy weather.
Mr Matey explained that lack of safety measures had contributed to spates of accidents on the road network in the Kumasi metropolis and its environs, stressing that with the reflectors, motorists would have a good view of the users wheelchairs and respect their rights as road users.
“We want to create a good working relationship with the disabled, and in doing so, their safety on the road is paramount. Hence, the donation of the reflectors,” he explained.
He said apart from the reflectors, the DVLA had also provided an avenue that facilitated the movement of the physically challenged to the offices of the Authority.
“We have now developed a disabled-friendly facility at the entrance which would enable them to move freely on the premises in order to transact business, especially at the lounge, where a lot of services are provided to our clients,” he explained.
Mr Matey said before the facility was constructed, “the disabled found it rather difficult to source for our services, but now the situation is different”.
He pointed out that the Kumasi office of the DVLA would continue to initiate programmes and projects that would support the disabled in various ways to enhance their safety.
To maintain sanity on the premises and prevent haphazard parking at the DVLA, Mr Matey said the Kumasi office had marked the parking lot in a way to accommodate as many vehicles as possible.
He advised motorists to always respect road safety regulations so as to reduce the spate of accidents that had been claiming lives and maiming others.
