From George Ernest Asare, Kumasi.
After 32 active years in the teaching service and 27 years as the queen mother of Jachie, Nana Afia Konadu Pankye retired from active service on Friday, February 5, 2010.
A farewell party was held in her honour at the Teachers Hall in Kumasi during which traditional rulers, the academia, pupils and family members graced the occasion in their numbers to acknowledge her contribution to education development in the country.
Enstooled as queen mother of Jachie in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region on November 24, 1983, Nana Konadu Pankye combined her traditional role as a queen mother and her profession as a teacher to empower girls in diverse ways to develop their potential.
This, according to her, helped many females not only to focus on their academic programmes, but to acquire the requisite skills that had helped them to contribute to sustainable socio-economic development of the country.
In her remarks at the function, Nana Konadu Pankye, who is the immediate past head teacher of Amankwaatia M/A Primary ‘B’ at Asokwa in Kumasi and has retired as an Assistant Director of education, pledged to continue to use her influence as a teacher and a traditional ruler to encourage females to develop their potential.
She pointed out that it was only when the literacy rate among females was enhanced that women would gain the needed confidence and have the ability to join their male counterparts in every field of endeavour to initiate policies and programmes that would impact positively on society.
