POLICE HUNT FOR MECHANIC (PAGE 25, MIRROR, JAN 9, 2010)

From George Ernest Asare, Kumasi

WHAT started as an ordinary argument on soccer between two mechanics in Kumasi on Christmas Day turned deadly when one of them allegedly hit the other to death.
The police gave the name of the deceased as Kwadwo Amponsah, aka ‘Mempene’, while the suspect was identified only as Twumasi.
Twumasi is on the run and the police have mounted a search to arrest him to assist in their investigations.
The body of Amponsah, who was 37 years old, had been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The police told The Mirror that Twumasi sneaked from his residence moments after he heard of the death of Amponsah and had since not been seen.
A source at the mechanic shop where the incident occurred said both the deceased and the suspect had been friends and occasionally exchanged ideas.
The source said when the two mechanics reported for work on Christmas Day, they engaged in an argument on the development of soccer at the local scene, which degenerated into a quarrel, causing Twumasi to throw a punch which floored the deceased.
The source said the deceased became weak after the fight and could not undertake any specific work for the rest of the day until a taxi driver came to his rescue and rushed him home.
Family sources also told The Mirror that “ he was dumped on his bed by the taxi driver and because he was alone, he was unable to call for help when his situation deteriorated,” the source said.
The source said around 7p.m. family members heard of his predicament at the workplace and rushed to his residence to find out about his condition, but they found him dead.
“We saw that blood had oozed from his nostrils and mouth and had given up the ghost, so we called the police and later conveyed the body to the mortuary for autopsy,” the source explained.
