POLICE ARREST MAN FOR FAKE CURRENCY (PAGE 29, MARCH 2, 2010)

The police in Kumasi have arrested a 27-year old man who is alleged to be dealing in fake currencies.
The suspect, who was arrested around 12 noon on Friday, February 19, 2010, gave his name as Kwasi Asare, a native of Effiduase in the Ashanti Region, resident at Kwadaso-Agric, a suburb of Kumasi.
Various denominations of fake US dollars and CFA, as well as liquid and powdery substances alleged to be used for the printing of the fake currencies, were retrieved from his bedroom after his arrest.
Police are hunting for an accomplice who was identified only as Apino.
Briefing newsmen after the suspect was paraded before the public with the substances retrieved from his bedroom, Assistance Superintendent of Police (ASP) Thomas Owoahene Acheampong of the Police Mobile Force said the suspect was arrested after a tip off.
He said on Friday February 19, 2010, police had a report that two men were engaged in a hot argument over fake currencies at Kwadaso Agric, so police quickly dispatched some of their men to investigate.
He said on arrival, Apino, who might have got wind of the presence of the police, quickly escaped, but the police arrested Akwasi Asare, the owner of the building where the fake currencies and substances alleged to be used in printing fake currencies were retrieved.
He said upon his arrest, the suspect vehemently denied that he owned the items retrieved from his room, and rather mentioned Apino as the one who brought them into the room for safe keeping.
When the Daily Graphic interviewed the suspect , he said he accepted the items from Apino but never knew that they were fake currencies.
He explained that the friend brought a bag full of items into his room for safe keeping and hinted him (Asare) that it contained some amount of money.
The suspect said he neither checked the content of the bag, nor the value of the money before he was arrested by the police.
