SERVE GOD IN HUMILITY — MONSIGNOR (MIRROR, PAGE 35, JAN 23, 2010)

From George Ernest Asare, Kumasi

A Catholic priest, Rev Monsignor Dominic Fosu Asiedu, has urged Christians in leadership positions to eschew attitudes that will cause the public to perceive them as authoritative, arrogant, selfish and corrupt.
He said such leaders should rather consider themselves as unique, specially called to serve God and mankind, explaining that exhibiting negative attitudes defeated their call to serve God in humility.
Delivering the sermon during a Mass at the St Mary’s Parish Church in Kumasi, Rev Monsignor Fosu said, “We have a mentor in Jesus Christ who occupied a unique position but proved to be the greatest servant since creation.”
He said notwithstanding Jesus’ position, He remained humble, “even to the point of death”.
“It is not your own effort that gave you the position you occupy. You got there through the Grace of God so you should always be humble and lead a life worthy of emulation for the name of God to be glorified,” he admonished.
He pointed out that authoritative and arrogant leaders did not only create barriers between themselves and their subordinates but also created unnecessary tension, leading to agitation and social unrest.
Rev Monsignor Fosu said leaders would always be successful in their endeavours if they trusted God and were faithful in all their operations.
He pointed out that like Jesus Christ, good leaders would not escape abuse from their subordinates and opponents, adding, “But it is at such periods that you should put your trust in God for Him to take control of the problems confronting you.”
“You cannot please everybody in life as leaders. This is because different people have different interests, visions and goals in life. However, as leaders, you should not allow the attitude of society affect your vision of serving them in truth. With a positive attitude, you will prove to be serving God, who gave you that position,” he added.
