OBUASI FANS WATCH NATIONS CUP ON GIANT SCREENS (GRAPHIC SPORTS, JAN 26, 2010)

Story: George Ernest Asare, Obuasi

Soccer fans in the Obuasi Municipality have been offered a real treatment of watching the ongoing 27th Orange Africa Nations Cup on three giant television screens where images of soccer stars on the field of play and actions by fans at all the stadia appear bigger and clearer .
The screens, erected by the mining company, Anglogold, have succeeded in wooing soccer fans from their homes to the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium, and two selected spots located at Anyinam and Wawase, where the fans have a better view of actions on the field of play and therefore analyse and watch the matches keenly
According to the Managing Director of Anglogold, Mr Kwesi Enyan, the Obuasi community enjoys watching soccer as a family, “so we decided to take advantage of the Angola 2010 tournament to erect the three giant screens with the view of offering them real opportunity to watch all the matches as if they were watching them live at stadium. We will do the same for them in June during 2010 World Cup in South Africa”
Stressing the rationale behind their action during an interview with the Graphic Sports, Mr Enyan noted “we wanted to expose soccer fans to watch such important matches on a big screen instead of the normal television where only core family members watch the games indoors.
“As we have gathered here to watch Ghana battling with their Angolan counterparts , it is just like watching the match live at the November 11 Stadium in Luanda. I think it is good to offer the community this unique opportunity as part of our corporate responsibilities”, he explained further.
He said with the impact made, “the screens would be erected during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . Wee now have three giant screens which we hope to increase during that tournament because we have noticed that the fans want to watch quality soccer, and this is what we are offering them”.
He said apart from what had been offered the soccer fans in the Obuasi Municipality, the company also sponsored two sports presenters from Shaft FM at Obuasi to the Angola tournament to enable them offer live commentary to their listeners within the Municipality
Mr Enyan said he was satisfied with the support offered the Black Stars by the Obuasi soccer fans and therefore appealed to them to extend the same gesture to the local Premier Club at Obuasi-Ashgold, to enable the team become more formidable and win more laurels at the local and international levels.
Some of the soccer fans who spoke to the Graphic Sports expressed their appreciation to the management of Anglogold for the gesture.
One of the fans, Mr. Osei Afriyie said converging at a spot to watch the Angolan tournament was unique “ because it is as if we are at a sports stadium watching every action.
“At home, we watch the match with only family members, so we miss the excitement, but here, we enjoy the fun just like the spectators at the stadium”, he explained.
Commending the management for their plan to extend the gesture to the South African tournament,Mr Afriyie said “ it will offer us another opportunity to watch every action with keen interest”.
