KMA BOSS BACKS WOMEN SOCCER (GRAPHIC SPORTS, FEB 5, 2010, PAGE 11)

The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Samuel Sarpong, has assured of the Assembly’s commitment to be at the forefront of developing women’s soccer in the region as a way of encouraging young females who have the potentials to effectively develop them for their benefits and that of the state.
He said already, the Assembly was collaborating with their counterparts in Lagos, Nigeria, to organise an annual soccer tournament and other sporting programmes to unearth talents.
He explained that apart from using the tournament to foster cordial relations between the two sister states, it would also be used to encourage both young males and females who have the potentials in any sports to develop them.
Mr Sarpong made the remarks when the Chief Executive Officer of Fabulous Ladies, Madam Habiba Atta, together with their Chief Patron, Nana Yaw Owusu, some players and the coach of the club presented a trophy they won to the KMA Chief Executive during a courtesy call at his office.
Fabulous Ladies which represented Ashanti Region won a national gala competition organised last year in Accra, and was therefore presented with a giant trophy which was presented to the KMA Chief Executive during the courtesy call.
Commending Fabulous Ladies for the honour in winning the trophy, Mr Sarpong said the KMA would liase with the Regional Sports Development Officer to organise regular soccer competitions among the various female soccer clubs in the region.
He commended Habiba Atta for single-handedly organising young females who have interest in soccer to develop their talents .
He pledged to donate GH¢2000 to the club as part of the Assembly’s support to enable management meet some of its budget requirements.
Earlier, Nana Yaw Owusu had enumerated some of the achievements of Fabulous Ladies and said with the efforts of the Chief Executive about seven players of the team are members of the Black Queens.
He said, the Chief Executive of Fabulous Ladies had proved over the years that she was keen on unearthing talents of young females who have interest in soccer .
He pointed out that unlike male soccer which receives regular financial support and sponsorships from corporate bodies, institutions, firms and individuals, female soccer hardly receives and financial support, making it difficult for the management to organise regular competitions to sustain the interest of the game.
Nana Yaw Owusu therefore challenged the public to show keen interest in women soccer as they do for males to enhance the effective development of women’s soccer..
This, he said would encourage management of women’s soccer to unearth many talents at both the rural and urban communities to facilitate the develop of the game among females.
In her remarks, Madam Habiba Atta said she had been appointed a Board Member of the National Sports Council and assured that she would not relent on her efforts to encourage young females who have interest in sports to develop them.
